Greenpeace Members Arrested for Peaceful Protest

When I was younger, I grew up hearing about our rights as Americans, such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc.  Over the years I have seen many, and taken part of protests against things that I don’t believe in, and never gotten in any trouble or faced criminal punishment, mainly because our demonstrations were always peaceful.  i was always under the impression that people are entitled to their own opinions, and if they want to protest those ideas, then more power to them, who are we to tell people what they should believe in and how they should act.

Recently 30 Greenpeace members were arrested on piracy charges for protesting arctic drilling.  These crew members come from 18 different countries, and if they are convicted of piracy they could spend up to 15 years in prison.  It is shocking when you hear about the potential years that these people could get for standing up for what they believe, and peacefully demonstrating in the arctic.  They weren’t hurting or harming anything, yet they could be locked up longer than some murderers and rapists.

Majority of society really doesn’t care too much about nature and animals, but it is always the ones that are trying to stop the damage to the earth that are being arrested and treated like criminals.  I remember watching a show called Whale Wars, and remember that the captain and some of their crew members got arrested (the reason the show is no longer aired), and these people were just trying to stop whales from becoming endangered and killed.

If everyone is scared to stand up for what they believe in, then what is our planet going to turn in to?
