The last eight years, I invested a lot of time researching about brain. The reason is simple. It is about my family member suffering with Tics Disorder (TS). TS is a result of neuro dis-functioning in the part of the brain. Now the question is, what does the brain do? “The brain is the control center for all the body’s functions, such as walking, talking, swallowing, breathing, taste, smell, heart rate and so on. It also controls all our thinking functions, our emotions, how we behave and all our intellectual (cognitive) activities, such as how we attend to things, how we perceive and understand our world and its physical surroundings, how we learn and remember and so on” (www.acquiredbraininjury.com/abi_manual/what-does-the-brain-do).
Everyone who has had a brain injury can be left with some changes in emotional reaction and behavior. I also believe that some of brain issues are genetics. For example some of TS is associated with genetics.
Here are Emotional and behavioral effects of the brain issues:
• Explosive anger and irritability
• Lack of awareness and insight
• Impulsivity and disinhibition
• Emotional liability
• Apathy and poor motivation
• Inflexibility and obsessionality
• Sexual problems
When I look many researches and compare my family member emotional and behavioral difficulties associate with TS, I really appreciate the progress of brain science. However, there are many questions are unanswered about the functioning and complexity of our brain. The other point is that how many people aware about mental illness and the behavioral issues. How many really know that it is very critical to invest a lot of money, a lot of attention, and compassion to taking care of millions of people who are suffering mental illness. Today, we read and see about many aggressions, anger and agitations. Some of the criminal activities are associated with mental illness. Some of our kids or our neighbors or co-workers may have mood changing every day. Who knows, all these issues may involve brain issues, which is not the fault of nobody. I personally believe that educating our self about human brain is very crucial to improve the way we judge and respond to personality treat of the individuals. It is also greatly helpful the way we see and deal with our children.
