Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse

Can you survive a zombie apocalypse? Pop culture has exploded recently with zombies. Seriously. If you haven’t seen some sort of zombie-related reference within the last month, you’re probably living in a cave and won’t stumble across this blog post anyways. Society’s obsession with the undead has caused movies, books, comic books, and even television series to explore different theoretical approaches to a zombie outbreak. So that begs the question, what is the best way to survive a zombie apocalypse? After much debating with friends and internet research, I’ve got answers.

Infectious Outbreak – What to Do

While the idea of dead people walking around eating you for dinner might seem a bit far fetched, an infectious, uncontrollable outbreak isn’t. A wide-scale outbreak could, theoretically, cause a sudden collapse of society as we know it, similar to those in zombie apocalypse stories. Which is why the Center for Disease Control, or the CDC, has taken notice. While it might be a bit tongue-in-cheek, the CDC has a guide for just such a circumstance with their page: Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse.

The CDC’s recommendations all boil down to: Have an emergency plan and supplies. Simple enough, but it could be the difference between life and undeath. Their recommendations for emergency supplies in a zombie apocalypse are the same as for any other type of major disaster. At minimum, you’ll need water and food. In other words, prepare yourself for any type of large scale disaster and you will be ready when the zombies are beating at your door.

Strategy for Survival

In an article with 5 tips from scientists, one strategic option is to head for the hills…or, more specifically, mountains. The population is sparse and it will be harder for the zombies to navigate. Plus the strategy is backed by a mathematical simulation done by Cornell University.

Making Your Zombie Apocalypse Plan

You’ve got the information and tips you need to craft your own zombie apocalypse survival plan. Will you take advice from the experts? Or do you have better ideas of your own? If nothing else, having some sort of ideas in advance will increase your odds of survival in a zombie apocalypse. Good luck! And make sure to have that food and water ready.
