There are generally two clear sides to the debate on abortion: “pro-life” and “pro-choice.” Individuals who consider themselves “pro-life” believe that an embryo or fetus is “alive” and consider destroying it to be an act of murder. Individuals who consider themselves as “pro-choice” believe that a woman should have the right to decide for herself whether or not she should carry out the pregnancy and give birth.
If we take away opinion from the debate, which include morals, ethics, and religion, the simplest form of the issue is whether or not healthy and safe abortions will be legal.
If one considers the reasoning for a voluntary abortion, it is most often because a woman feels as though it is in her and the child’s best interest to not carry through with the pregnancy. This means that no matter what your opinion is on the matter, no matter who you vote into office, no matter what you protest or shame, abortions will always exist, and let me tell you why. Contrary to thousands of years of thinking, women have had, currently have, and will always have the ability to think critically and to make intelligent executive decisions based on reasoning for their own lives and for their children’s lives. As long as this is the case, abortions will exist.
Writer, professor, and blogger Roxane Gay writes:
“It surprises me, though it shouldn’t, how short the memories of these politicians are. They forget the brutal lengths women have gone to in order to terminate pregnancies when abortion was illegal or when abortion is unaffordable. Women have thrown themselves down stairs and otherwise tried to physically harm themselves to force a miscarriage. Dr. Waldo Fielding noted in the New York Times, ‘Almost any implement you can imagine had been and was used to start an abortion—darning needles, crochet hooks, cut-glass salt shakers, soda bottles, sometimes intact, sometimes with the top broken off.‘ Women have tried to use soap and bleach, catheters, natural remedies. Women have historically resorted to any means necessary. Women will do this again if we are backed into that terrible corner. This is the responsibility our society has forced on women for hundreds of years.”
― Roxane Gay,
No matter what your opinion is about abortion, pro-life or pro-choice, it is a fact that making abortion illegal will not prevent abortions from happening. It would only create the “terrible corner” Roxane Gay describes and force the women of America to make unsafe decisions.
