I am convinced that skate park creation is an effective way to improve relations with other members of the community. Skate parks are civic epicenters where people can gather to either participate or or watch the positive activity that happens at skate parks. There are many places that still to-this-day don’t have sufficient government approved spaces to skateboard which is holding civic progress back in those places. I am always amazed at a city the size of Minneapolis not voluntarily getting involved in skate park creation.
Josh Nims gives a great presentation about the skateboarding situation in Philadelphia and the creation of their first real skate park. This ted talks is 20 minutes long but gives a recent history lesson about skateboarding and how people need places to perform the act of skateboarding.
