Have you noticed lately that there seems to be lot of pictures of food posted by a lot of your Muslim friend’s? Well that is because it is currently Ramadan. Ramadan is celebrated by millions of Muslims all over the world.
What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. It is a month of fasting, blessings and prayers. It is a month that is supposed to bring you closer to Allah. For the month Muslims, fast from sunrise to sunset. They abstain from eating and drinking the entire day. A simple sip of water will break your fast. After sunset, you can eat. This is when a feast with family and friends take place.
Lots of families and friends get together and bring all sorts of food for the feast. For example, my family does it a little different. We pick a different person to host the feast every weekend. When it was my house that hosted it, me and my sister cooked a variety of foods. We had about twenty-five family members over, it was beautiful. It makes you appreciate a good tine with your family.
The last ten days of Ramadan are even more important. It is considered to be the most blessed part of the month. Therefore, Muslims spend the last 10 nights in a Mosque. They pray intensely into the middle of the night. The prayers usually start around midnight and doesn’t end until around 3 am.
At the end of the month it is one of the two Islamic holidays. It is called Eid Al Fitr. On that day everyone gets up early in the morning, head to prayers. After prayer families get together to celebrate. They have a feast, and exchange gifts. Children usually get money from friends and family. Then the lovely month of Ramadan comes to an end.
