Distracted Driving

What Is Distracted Driving?

There are 3,287 deaths each day due to fatal car crashes. On average, 9 of these fatalities are related to distracted driving.

Distracted driving is any activity that takes the drivers attention away from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system- anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.
I can say honestly I have been guilty of looking at a cell phone, reaching down to grab something while driving, or changing my radio station. That buzz of your phone. The sound is tempting to do a quick glance down to read who it is. But is it worth it? In just a few seconds while you are looking at your phone, you could be changing not only your life, but others as well.
Something changed for me three years ago. My son got his license! I spent more time in the passenger seat. I started to observe other drivers more in that seat. Just a month ago my daughter got her permit, again I was forced to observe other drivers habits. As a mother I fear every time my kids get behind the wheel. Not because of their actions, but because of the actions of others on the road.
Put your phone down and drive article in the Duluth News Tribune was a good reminder of this dangerous epidemic on our roads. Texting-the most common cause of distracted driving accidents-is fast becoming the new drunk driving.

In 2015, the most recent year for which there are U.S. Department of Transportation statistics, distracted-driving crashes caused 3,500 fatalities and close to 400,000 injuries.

Have the Conversation

I have had the conversation with my kids. I have put away my cell phone while driving. But what about when I am not in the car with them? Will their phone be out? Will they notice the guy next to him on his and drive safe around him?

Do your part and please put your phone away.

Controlling the Weight of an Elephant

Driving to work this morning I found my mood going down the tube. It wasn’t just a case of the Mondays or due to the change in weather. It was a case of I hate people. Yep, I hate people. To be more specific, I hate people who are not focused on driving and nearly crash into me.
