Generate Buzz Through Positive Outlets

The audiences for this post are my classmates. My goal is to continue on with my theme of how we use social media as a tool for good or evil (yes, I know my perspective is subjective).

Social media has the power to connect us with people and ideas from across the globe; this tool can be used for good or evil. I prefer to seek positive exchanges and found a community that’s trying to save the world through mitigating their waste. My thoughts are, how we can use conscious consumerism as a solution to our current ecological problems? Nobody wants to be told what to do… Unless it’s by someone you respect and trust. Buzz Agents (Struthers and Wang pg. 219) is a concept based off of using peers as a more reliable source of information through social media campaigns that incorporates a cooperative aspect with an authentic non-commercialized influencer or “Buzz Agent”. If you’re trying to raise awareness to an issue, gaining a relationship with your audience through sharing manageable and functional actions they can take to contribute to your message is an essential instrument for causing a larger affect. I follow The Wasted Blog, here the author is on a journey to becoming a more conscious consumer by using items that are long-lasting and not disposable. It’s difficult to change the way people do things on a daily basis but by bringing attention to simple alternatives that can have a big impact on our world for the better, Buzz Agents can flip the narrative and offer a positive outlet. Use your platforms as a way to spread some positive vibes.

Communication Through Social Media

Audience: Millennials

Through history our communication technique’s and skills have changed and evolved because of social media. There was a time where the internet was not around and the way we communicated was strictly through phone, letter or a face to face interaction. Social media has changed the way  we will forever communicate with people, friends and family from all over the world.

One thing researchers focused on was the personal barrier that is broken down through social media. People venting and releasing their problems on social media has became a normal thing. So before social media people wouldn’t have a conversation with their coworker’s about personals things. Although now with social media and people already having those things out there makes the conversation more approachable. Another point they focused on was how communication has changed though social media and how we short phrase everything. We have developed new words for other words or instead writing out words we abbrievate for example I don’t Know instead we would say idk which would be its short phrase. Some researchers have talked about how these things can actually be negative in the academic environment with performance because this is not the proper communication style. Although should schools have a focus on this new age communication because it may not be going  anywhere? Also a point researchers focused on was the access to communicate with thousands of people from around the world is what makes communication through social media so great. This gives us ability to reach a bigger audience and interact with more people. In Chapter 5 Castell talks about the influence of technology and internet how big of impact it will play into our culture. We have all seen changes that is already happen to our culture and there will continue to be changes for how we communicate through social media we just hope they help our culture in a positve way.

Cyber Hipsters – My Love Hate Relationship With Instagram

The audiences for this post are my classmates and I intend to help them understand my love hate relationship with Instagram.

I started to use Instagram as a way to share my love for photography. There I discovered a community of people who enjoyed doing the same and all was well for some time. But lately I’ve found social media to be a constant advertisement, always creating new ways to monetize experiences. It seems as though everyone is trying to promote their agendas instead of connecting with each other. In B. J. Mendelson’s book Social Media is Bullshit, he coins a term “Cyber Hipster” as a means to call out those who discharge a highbrow agenda and pretend everyone can obtain their ranks without some sort of sacrifice or privilege. They then proceed to sell you on an exclusive idea, maybe it’s a retreat in Bali they’re putting on or a new product before it starts to trend, whatever it is they’re looking for financial sponsors in their social media following. It’s becoming harder to see authentic motives behind some of the Instagram community members I once championed for not being “Cyber Hipsters”  and I’m no longer subscribing to their agendas.

Social Media’s Influence On Communication

How has social media changed the way we engage?

Well, in a lot of ways to be honest.  Looking at the evolution of social media over the last decade has been somewhat of a whirlwind.  The dawn of the smart phone era has kick started the largest technological mobilization in human history. We are connected to the internet, in some way, almost 100% of our lives.  According to the link above on of the biggest reasons why our interactions are changing is simply due to the number of people we interact with. We now seem to care about that over-the-top social media posts from that guy you sat next to in 10th grade Biology class. Why? Because we are connected on social media! Seems pretty simple, but the general direction of our ever increasing interconnected lives is not slowing down. One of the main goals of social media is to bring people together. So is the erosion of our communication boundaries really a bad thing? I guess it depends how you use social media and how you shape your identity around your use of social media.  According to the author’s opinion the lack of filters on our communication come at a price. I would have to agree. The level of toxicity on the internet is at an all time high. However, the amount of communication being distributed and received on the internet is at an all time high as well.  Perhaps, humans have always held these extremely toxic views but had no way of expressing that message, much less have a platform to broadcast it world wide.

Similar to my last post about this topic, I took a look at a few required readings for MDST485 course. I found myself connecting the points made in Castell’s Network Society Ch. 5. – Castell describes culture of real virtuality. He argues that the enormous influence and the sheer level of importance technology and the internet have on our lives have pushed elements of our existence into the virtual realm.  There is no doubt that this is true.  The amount of time we spend on the internet is increasing each year, the use of social media platforms are always increasing, and yet we still seem to be incapable of conversing with one another respectfully.  I don’t want to believe that we are at the beginning of what will be the fall of our society but if we do not take time to realize what social media is doing to us, we simply have no chance.

Hidden messages in social media?

My audience is the MDST 485 class and the goal of this blog is to inform my fellow classmates about how our modern use of social media can have a negative impact on our lives and our well-being.

You can see it in your Facebook timeline or Instagram gallery – a digital footprint of your mental health.

It’s not always hidden in the obvious hashtags or inspirational quotes, but rather interpreted through the subtle use of words that might be hinting … you’re feeling kind of blue.

And, literally, your photo feed will focus on the cool blues and grey tones in your pictures when you’re feeling blue. Your words reflect your negative energy, and your pictures will look as blue as your words sound. Along with your lessened posting comes the lessening of likes. Nobody will want to “like” your blue enhanced rainy day picture with sad song lyrics.

That’s exactly the problem. When we take to social media to express our emotions and show the rest of the world a little bit of our “real” life, nobody wants to see the real. We’re expected to show the highlights, the happy things that will make other people happy, too. Even when we are posting seemingly happy pictures, there are hidden clues that prove we aren’t as happy as is posted.

The words we use are more telling about our mental health than we realize. This tool analyzes text and examines the words we’re using in order to tell us more about our emotional state.

The Castells reading talked about how we can change the behaviors of others through the use of social marketing. Even if this type of direct marketing isn’t 100% effective, it’s still a positive way to connect with an audience and spread a message. Sharing positive messages, whether that be for the sake of advertising or through our own personal updates, is infectious to the attitudes of others. Once we address our own behaviors and make positive changes, we can influence others positively through social media.

Benefits of Social Media

Audience: millennials and to show the positives of social media.

In my last blog I focused on a negative side of social media and the way it affected children growing into teenagers with the access to social media. Although in this post I have focused on the positives and why social media should be used as a valuable tool.

In David Meerman Scott’s book The New Rules of Marketing and PR he talks about social media being a tool and how valuable it is for so many avenues. In Chapter 17 he talks about podcasting and how this tool can be used to get your message out to the world. In my article they didn’t talk very much about podcast’s so I wanted to reference David Scott’s focus on how podcasts is apart of social media and are very valuable tool. In the article I focused on how they talked about social media platforms like instagram, facebook, twitter, and youtube and how they could be beneficial to people living in a world where social media has huge influence. One of the main arguments in my article focused on how social media allows you maintain social connections and networks. Also about the quick access and how fast news travels on social media and how these are huge components that if we were to take away a lot of opportunity’s and connections would dissolve. The researchers talked about how this idea of social networking that is happening through social media is build skills for people that you can’t get in other experiences of isolation. Social networking services are designed to support users working, thinking and acting together. They also require listening and compromising skills to be able to be effective through social media. They talk about people that grow up in this social media era world having better exploring and learning skills. As well as being more independent and building resilience at a faster rate because of the experiences that social media provides. At the end of the article they talk about how all these skills will develop certain skills at a faster rate to be better at any profession you may choose. 

I believe the article had very valid points about how and why social media is a valuable tool. Although countering that social media still has it’s negative but should never be dismissed as not a valuable tool in a media driven world.Social-Media-e1518208936600

Social-Network

This three-part blog series is directed to social media users, students, and every individual that has access to the media. Part 2 of our blog series will be discussing how to utilize social media. It will be addressing students, parents, and everyone else who needs to put their networking skills to use.

There is no doubt social media has many benefits, but there is more to connecting with individuals besides browsing, liking, and clicking on their profile pics. We need to able to get out of our comfort zones and connect with like-minded individuals to network and look for support. In this tech-driven society we have so much access to valuable information at our fingertips. Why not use it to our advantage? social media connects the entire world, and it makes it easy to spread information if you are utilizing it correctly.  Social media gives you a platform in which you will be able to share messages and information you are passionate about with a large audience in a matter of seconds. It gives you a voice and can trigger change, just by  reaching out to connections in your social media platforms like; FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. In our text Castells states,

“Humans create meaning by interacting with their natural and social environment, by networking with their neural networks with the networks of nature and with social networks.” Communicating effectively and exchanging information is the way to transfer messages to your network.”

The ability to understand the variety of social platforms will help you understand how to reach your audience. The language and audience is different across the social media platforms. If you want to reach a more professional audience you probably wouldn’t use Snapchat, each social media channel has different ways to communicate with the audience and a different voice. Effectively timing and crafting your messages in such a way to reach your audience can help you better network.

#deletefacebook & “1984”

In my last blog, I talked about the current state of social media, while referencing recent events such as the Parkland mass shootings, as well as our class reading, “Social Media is Bullshit?” I came to the conclusion that social media isn’t “bullshit”, and that it’s simply a tool. And as with all tools, it can be used for good or bad.

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about social media being used…again as a bad tool. #deletefacebook is a current campaign to, as the hashtag states, delete the Facebook application from our lives. The reason for this action against Facebook is because the company shared peoples info with other entities, some harmless and some harmful.

Personally, I find it ironic and humorous that people are punishing a company for sharing info that individuals are freely sharing. We are at a crossroads as a society, and at some point we’ll have to make a decision whether or not to exist in complete transparent lives.

Do you remember the George Orwell novel, “1984”? The book is set in a fictional province of the superstate Oceania, whose citizens are victims of ongoing war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. Even though it was published in 1949, the troubling societal themes reverberate today. This novel seems to be a prescient reflection of the current and future state of social interaction.

So what is the end game? There’s so much access to people, their information…almost everything with the right resources. I think we need to look to the mechanisms that are ultimately behind all of this.

Benefits of social media

The second topic I would like to discuss is the benefits of social media. My audience for this posting would be anyone who uses social media, students and teachers in this class and companies or people who market or campaign through social media.

Whether we like to admit it ‘our’ generation eats, sleeps and breathes social media. It’s reach and popularity is without doubt. According to www.quantumrun.com, “It’s estimated that by 2018, 2.44 billion people will be using social networks.” Yes, this might not be the healthiest trend for us to participate in however, there can be benefits from this. As we rely more on technology the need for social media platforms increases. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Podcasts allow for instantaneous news coverage, access to limitless information and connects us with the world all within the click of the button.

The opportunities that social media can create are endless. With recent social and political issues being brought to the surface Twitter and Instagram can be used to create awareness by trending hashtags. They can also provide information and rally people for a cause such as creating a buzz agent for the Women’s Rights Marches, Black Lives Matter protests and Most recently the March For Your Lives. If you click on the hashtag or a tagged photos it will literally connect you with millions of other people who are supporting the same cause. What method of getting information out can literally beat that?

Chapter 17 in this weeks Scott reading discusses a newer tool in social media which is Podcasting. This is something I never used to care to listen to until I found an interesting Podcast that caught my attention. I see this platform continues to take off and joining the more well known ones.

Whatever social media platform you follow, the limitless benefits are undeniable.

 

Benefits of Social Media On: Music Artists

It is obvious by now that social media has taken over the way that people and companies advertise and communicate, but how? The changes are significant and have their benefits. In this three-part blog series, I will be explaining the benefits of social media’s influence on three major subjects: visual media, music artists, and businesses. These posts will hopefully be informative to those who don’t know about the benefits in relation to these topics, as well as entertain those who do know the benefits, and hopefully teach them something they don’t know.

In the last post I talked about the benefits of social media on visual media. This time, I will explain how social media benefits aspiring musicians and musician’s fanbases.

Musicians of the past few decades found fame through touring extensively and getting their music on the radio. Their goal was also to get signed to a record label and create music videos that would hopefully be featured on T.V. With the advancement of technology and social media presence in the daily lives of people, appealing to a wider audience is now easier than ever. Musicians are now able to spread the word of a band or single artists through platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and more. Most of these platforms allow you to upload your own content without the help of anyone else and allow anyone to consume your content (either for free or for a fee).  This was not always true seeing as how, in the past, an artist would have to have to work through someone (typically a label) to promote their music and make it available for the masses. This makes it easier for independent artists to really make a name for themselves and for more people to even create and promote their own record labels.

Another marketing benefit of social media for musicians is more personally oriented. From a relational standpoint, musicians can now show much more of their personality and share their experiences with their fans than before. This can lead to more involvement, higher outreach, and better sales for their music. Brandon Seymour of indieonthemove.com makes a good point about this, saying “As a band, you have the unique opportunity to be the “tastemaker” for your audience. Step outside the box and incorporate some non-band-related content that you find interesting and chances are your followers will find it interesting too” (Seymour 2013). Being able to appeal to people even when it isn’t about music, can make the community support stronger. This improved involvement of fans can also lead to higher satisfaction as a result of feedback.

Social media can also lead to the spreading of knowledge as well as the expansion of networks. The tradition of spreading fliers for an upcoming show is not dead, but it is seriously overshadowed by the implementation of social media posts and event pages. Facebook specifically, has an event page system that engages people who are planning on attending and provides all the information they need about said event. These event pages can be shared between friends and grow in attendance. When a band posts that they are having an event, friends can ‘tag’ each other in the comments to get their attention. As said simply by David Meerman Scott in The New Rules of Marketing and PR, “When you tag people, they get notifications that point them to the tagged content. Isn’t that great? When you create something interesting, your friends can spread it for you!” (Scott 2017). These tags can allow for people to see new bands they have never heard about including aspiring new bands.

There are so many positive uses of social media for musical artists including, product/music promotion, personal artist-fan interaction, spreading of knowledge and networks, and more. I did not touch on everything but hopefully this will get you thinking about how much social media can help aspiring artists.
